六古窯とは中世12世紀前後までに成立し現在まで生産が続く6つの産地である。
瀬戸焼、常滑焼、越前焼、信楽焼、丹波立杭焼、備前焼がそれにあたる。しかし瀬戸焼は愛知県瀬戸市周辺で焼かれる陶磁器の総称であるため個別には赤津焼、瀬戸染付焼も六古窯に分類される。また伊賀焼は開窯当初は産地の近さ及び原材料である陶土が同じことから信楽焼と区別することが難しく、よって現在の伊賀焼も六古窯の一つと見なされることがある。そのような混乱が生じる背景には六古窯が中世の古窯を指す言葉であり、今日では産地の離合集散、名称の分化・総称化が起こり、且つ当時のままの名称も残っていることがあると考えられる。
陶磁器の性質としては須恵器から発展した炻器が中心で丈夫で耐水性に優れるものが多い。
その始まりには諸説あり史料も多くはないことから今後の調査が待たれるが、基本的には当時としては比較的高級なものとして扱われていた須恵器から発展したことから貴族などの需要があった可能性が考えられる。
古い産地だけありその技術、人材、製品は日本の他の陶磁器産地の発展にも大きく係わることになる。会津本郷焼、笠間焼、大谷焼、石見焼など六古窯との関係が深い産地は多い。
現在でも比較的規模の大きな産地が多く、六古窯産地の首長が一堂に会しシンポジウムや交流事業などを行う六古窯サミットなるものが行われており技術や伝統の継承に対する取り組みにも積極的である。また各産地では陶磁器生産を街づくりや地域活性化策と絡めて観光資源としている所もあり観光地としても比較的充実している場合が多い。
